Who invented the first bra?
The invention of the bra can be traced back throughout history, from the Stone Age times where loincloths made of animal hides, were worn. In Ancient Greece swathes of leather were worn to support the breast.
Fastforward to the early 20th century, this marked the advancement of the bra in a time where corsets began to be worn less. Corsets were divided into two hence the "invention" of the Brassiere.
In 1913 a woman from New York 'Mary Phelps Jacob' created out of 2 silk handkerchiefs a kind of bra to suit her newly purchased evening gown where a corset just wouldn't do! Her creation became popular and in 1914 her invention, although not the first bra produced, was however the first patented 'brassiere' in the US. Her invention was the first patent to be registered and issued under the name 'Brassiere'!
