: UK Winner - Triumph Inspiration Award

UK Winner of the Triumph Inspiration Award ’09 announced at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, June 11th 2009

Triumph announces the UK winner James Nolan, inspired by Odette and Odile. James says, "My main influence was the 1800's crinoline. Body distortion fascinated me and it was my objective to make this dark subject beautiful. My icons needed to represent my ideas of manipulation, distortion and metamorphosis and the story of Swan Lake is perfect. The dance tells the tale of love and magic where a princess is turned into a swan by an evil magician. Dance has always influenced me and it was the mixture of distortion and movement that led me to think outside conventional lingerie. I wanted my lingerie to tell a story when it moved. The fabric had to be graceful in movement and reveal the human within.  The historical shape of an upturned crinoline when a lady sat down revealing her bloomers and undergarments was an important reference and I felt the playful shape complemented the scale and mood of the bra. It became a metaphor for the swan princess, half woman, half swan. Odette is pure, Odile is evil."

The UK winner James Nolan will now go forward to represent the UK at the Triumph Inspiration Award ’09 grand final at the Triennale di Milano Design Museum in Milan on the evening of September 23rd, the opening day of Milan Fashion Week. On the jury to decide the most inspiring piece will be internationally renowned experts from the worlds of fashion, design, lifestyle and media. This year, the second year of the Triumph Inspiration Award (TIA) contest, students from 70 fashion and design schools spanning 28 countries across the world have competed to create the very best conceptual showpiece set (comprising an underwired bra and brief). Dedicated to the overall theme “Icons”.

Triumph UK Ambassador Louise Redknapp says, "An Icon is someone who inspires you and is usually instantly recognizable. They have taken their craft to another level, leaving a legacy for younger generations to enjoy and build on.  They have vision, determination and an innate understanding of their public. For young designers passion for what they’re creating and determination to succeed are two qualities they should never lose sight of. The TIA opens the door for young designers all around the world. It gives them the opportunity to meet experts from the fashion world and glean invaluable feedback and encouragement on their work, it nurtures our designers of tomorrow.”

With inspiration from the obvious to the unusual, reflecting the students’ passion for enhancing the female form with innovative designs and unexpected materials, 10
finalists from Central Saint Martins in London and 10 from De Montfort in Leicester  presented their showpieces to a panel of fashion specialists at a private judging session. The panel included:
